Welcome to our Choice-based Art Studio at Willow Brook Elementary

Welcome to our Choice-based Art Studio! This is my first year adventuring into Choice-Art and I couldn't feel more energized or blessed to be an art teacher! The children are creating amazing things and great learning is taking place! I love the personal value I am seeing in their artwork, which makes me feel like our student/teacher relationships are growing stronger because I can see them in their creations! Currently, students may choose from 8 different studios. All studios are color coded so students are able to identify where to access materials.  Girls and boys take turns in choosing their studios first. The bracelets let students know when a studio is closed, however, there are times, we have students find "open seating" so they can continue working on a piece or explore in a new medium.

Collage, Drawing, Painting and Sculpture were are first studios and we added Fiber Arts, Sewing (hand and machine), Architecture and Ceramics (clay).
We have a cabinet for all of our classroom bins.  Youngest student classes are on the bottom and older are to the top.

Studio signs are color-coded, along with our bracelets, and labeled materials.
We have our dining room hutch creating a separation between our Painting and Sculpture Studio. The hutch houses Painting Studio supplies and our Inspiration Station stocked with art books, art magazines and project ideas. Our classes are great at following our routines.

Students created our beautiful accents to our classroom chandelier.

Students helped paint dining chairs for our studio centers.  As the lead learner in our studio, I wanted the dining tables and chairs to feel like home. Being at home makes us feel safe and I wanted our artists to feel safe in their creating and explorations in content and mediums.
Check out detailed photos of our studio in the next posting on our studios.

  1. I will be adventuring to TAB curriculum in April through end of the year as part of my individual professional development plan. I have 260 students K-5 and will do 4 studios- drawing, painting, fiber arts, sculpture/assemblage. Your art studio looks so organized and inspiring! What did you use to make the studio bracelets? I appreciate your detailed photos and descriptions- and any suggestions you have. =)

    1. Be patient with yourself as you move forward. The biggest hurdle for me is slowing down and not worry so much about having a product. I used our yarn for the bracelets and color coding things has really worked. Less is more. I think that the studios are fine with simple materials to begin with, but showing the children new ways to use them, rather than stocking them with wonderful art treasures.

  2. Could we use your photos for a feature in SchoolArts Magazine? They would work perfectly for our theme of Play. We would need high resolution images and you could send them to me at nancywalkup@mac.com.

    1. I just measured... my room looks bigger than it is in the photos. It is 24'x27'. I hope this helps. Thank you for visiting my blog.

  6. How long do you see each class per week? I've been going back and forth on how to place a loose structue of class projects and allowing them to have choice based studio. I'm considering alternating between 2 weeks of a traditional project and 2 weeks of Open Studio. I have each class 40 min per week. 500+ students each week. K-5. Thoughts?

    1. Hi Becky, thank you for visiting WildcatsCreate. I have 19 sections and see them for two 40 minute class periods per week There are teachers that have modified Choice. I suggest you do what is best for you... there is not a recipe for TAB/Choice when you are in your own space. Do what is comfortable and you will be able to gauge what works and what doesn't. I would definitely set the expectations that you will have expected class projects and do some choice. Sometimes once children have the freedom to choose, it can be hard to go back, but it is all how you set it up. Best of luck and feel free to reach out anytime!

    1. Thank you for finding Wildcatscreate! Thank you so much... that was the feel I was going for as a mommy of five. My children get creative at the kitchen table, on the coffee table and even on the floor. I wanted my students to feel comfortable and be able to feel safe to try new things in a school setting that felt like home.
